- Result on the day: marked instantly, with your result emailed the same day
- Your URN: a pass email carries a unique reference number, your proof of passing
- Using it: quote the URN on your citizenship or settlement (ILR) application
- If you fail: rebook any date at least 3 days away, and pay the £50 fee again
This guide covers what happens immediately after your test: getting your result, what your digital URN is for, and the rules for retakes. It is not immigration advice. For how to use your result in an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship application, read the current guidance on GOV.UK or speak to a regulated immigration adviser.
How to check your Life in the UK test results
Your result is sent to your registered email address and recorded in your online Life in the UK account on the same day you sit the test. If you pass, that email carries a unique reference number (URN), and the URN is your official proof of passing for a citizenship or ILR application.
You are told the outcome and nothing more: there is no exact score, no mark out of 24, and no list of the questions you answered wrongly. If the email has not arrived, check your junk folder, then sign in to your account to confirm the result is recorded there.
Do you get a Life in the UK test certificate?
No, physical certificates are no longer issued. As of December 2019, paper pass notification letters were discontinued and replaced by a digital unique reference number (URN). You simply provide this URN on your citizenship or settlement application for the Home Office to verify. Because the process is completely digital, there is no physical Life in the UK test certificate replacement to apply for. Just keep your URN confirmation email safe, or log in to your official testing account to retrieve the number whenever you need it.
Life in the UK test retake rules: what happens if you fail?
There is no limit on the number of attempts, and GOV.UK does not set a waiting period between them, so you can sit the test again as soon as a slot suits you. Two standard booking rules still apply: you must book at least 3 days before the date you want, the same minimum notice as any other booking, and the Life in the UK test retake fee is the same £50 as your first attempt.
Use that gap properly rather than rereading the handbook end to end. A fail usually comes down to a handful of topics, so the quickest route to a pass is finding those topics and fixing them.
