How many questions do you need to pass?
To pass the Life in the UK test you must answer at least 18 out of 24 questions correctly, which is the 75% pass mark. That means you can afford a maximum of 6 incorrect answers; a seventh fails you. All questions are multiple choice and drawn from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). You will meet three question types. One of each, taken from our free practice exams:
- Single answer
- Question: Where can Big Ben be found?
- Answer: The Houses of Parliament.
- Multiple answer
- Question: What two responsibilities will you have as a British citizen or permanent resident of the UK?
- Answer: Looking after yourself and your family, AND looking after the area in which you live and the environment.
- Note: You must select all correct options to earn the point. There is no partial credit.
- True or false
- Question: The Bill of Rights of 1689 guaranteed all adult men the right to vote.
- Answer: False.
With 45 minutes on the clock you have just under two minutes per question, which gives most candidates ample time to complete the test and review any flagged answers before submitting.
Understanding the 75% pass mark and scoring rules
While a 75% pass mark may sound achievable, a margin of just six incorrect answers leaves little room for error. Questions can come from anywhere in the handbook's five chapters: Tudor history, the structure of the Scottish Parliament, a specific cultural festival. Being underprepared in a single chapter can consume your entire allowance on its own.

Life in the UK test retake rules and fees
If you do not pass, the result is not permanent. GOV.UK confirms you can rebook the test as many times as you need, but every attempt costs a new £50 fee and must be booked at least 3 days ahead. Because a settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) or British citizenship application cannot proceed without the pass, avoiding retakes saves both time and money.

How to know you are ready

- Take the quiz at the end of every section. Test your knowledge immediately after each section, so you find and fix weak points before moving on to the next topic.
- Simulate the real exam. Sit full mock exams under timed conditions (24 questions, 45 minutes) and book your official test only when your recent scores consistently hit 80% or higher.
Most candidates are ready within two to four weeks of focused daily revision. Consistent practice beats cramming the night before.
